WEST SIDE STORY, THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CLASSIC

“We all agreed that West Side Story was just a working title we would use until someone suggested something better. But no one ever came up with another idea.”Jerome Robbins

This grandiose masterpiece from the pens of the first so-called creative team, which pioneered the American musical genre - Leonard Bernstein (music), Jerome Robbins (conception/direction and choreography), Arthur Laurents (book) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) – is well-known by millions. As a musical it is one of the most successful theater pieces ever produced; as a film it won ten Oscars.

The gripping and at the same time touching story, the unequalled music and the captivating choreography of Jerome Robbins combine to make West Side Story one of the most popular modern musical classics even today.

Only three directors worldwide have the official right from Robbins Rights Trust to produce this unique inheritance as an original production of West Side Story. The director and choreographer Joey McKneely, nominated numerous times for the Tony Award, has created choreography for Broadway shows including Smokey Joe’s Cafe, The Life, Wild Party and The Boy From Oz. In 1989, when he was still a solo dancer, McKneely mastered the extraordinary dance vocabulary of the legendary Jerry Robbins in his exceptional show revue, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway.

In an authentic yet fresh and new production, McKneely brings to life the original West Side Story. Paul Gallis from the Netherlands has designed the sets, Renate Schmitzer has designed the costumes and Peter Halbsgut is responsible for the lighting. Donald Chan is the Musical Supervisor.
The Supervising Producer is Dagmar Windisch from Creative Partners, and the Executive Producer is Michael Brenner, producer and impresario of BB Promotion, in a coproduction with Sundance Productions Inc., New York.
